FEATURE STORY

SOLVING THE 1789
SMALLPOX MYSTERY

joseph-jeffries-american-native-indian.jpg

The smallpox plague at Sydney Cove in April 1789 suddenly appeared out of nowhere. It baffled Governor Phillip then, and has baffled historians ever since. Was it brought by the French? Did it come overland from northern Australia? The answer finally comes from doing some simple arithmetic.

Reconciliation Manningham acknowledges the Woiwurrung language people of the Kulin Federation as the traditional custodians and curators of the Yarra Valley Estate, the land we now all share.

We pay respects to their Elders past and present, and take pride as Australians, in sharing this heritage of the world’s oldest living culture.
