WHAT'S IN A NAME?

It is a well-established Australian cultural tradition to refer to others by nicknames or joke names. But this tradition did not begin with British colonisation; it was well established long before that. In traditional Aboriginal culture, each different tribal group had a nickname for each of their neighbours and some of these names have survived into the present day.

Reconciliation Manningham acknowledges the Woiwurrung language people of the Kulin Federation as the traditional custodians and curators of the Yarra Valley Estate, the land we now all share.

We pay respects to their Elders past and present, and take pride as Australians, in sharing this heritage of the world’s oldest living culture.
